Item Application of Peptides in Pharmaceutical Industry(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2024-01) Selvaraj,Saranya; Weerasinghe,LaksiriPeptides have emerged as versatile entities in the pharmaceutical industry by playing pivotal roles in drug discovery, development, and targeted drug delivery systems. While, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved 60 peptides, and more will soon be available for purchase. In this review we provide a brief overview of the multifaceted applications of peptides, highlighting their significance in pharmaceutical research and therapeutics.Item Organic Synthesis on Graphene and other carbonaceous Materials(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2020-01) Weerasinghe,LaksiriCarbon is widely available inexpensive material. Graphene is a two-dimensional crystalline carbon allotrope that has fascinated researchers worldwide and has extended the interest in carbon structures such as fullerenes and nanotubes Carbon-based-materials have been utilized for a variety of applications including organic synthesis and heterogeneous catalysis.Item Protecting Groups in Organic Synthesis(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2019-01) Weerasinghe,LaksiriCreating a complex target molecule with a sequence of reactions, including intermediary re-functionalization with a correctly placed skeleton, is often a challenging task. One of the key issues in such endeavor is chemoselectivity. Protecting groups play an important role in multistep organic synthesis to improve the chemoselectivity in subsequent steps.Item Role of Synthetic Organic Chemistry in Sustainable Agriculture(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2020-05) Weerasinghe,Laksiri; Chathurika,SuraniUndernourishment and malnutrition are major human health concerns in the developing world and these issues are becoming major threats with the increasing population.1 According to the FOA, in 2050 the world’s population is expected to be increased by 2 billion.Providing nutritious foods in adequate amount for the increasing world population is a challenging task.2 Sustainable development in agriculture is critically important to improve theglobal food security and food nutrition. To achieve this goal world’s agriculture has to increase the quantity and diversity of foods. Synthetic organic chemistry has playing a major role in crop protection and food protection. The control of pathogens, insect pests and weeds has been the major contributor to the agricultural yield. New agrochemicals has got escalating demand. Safe and efficient new organic molecules with new mode of actions will claim a place in agriculture for many years to come.Item Seminar on Advanced Technologies in Food Chemistry(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2023-01) Weerasinghe,LaksiriA seminar on ‘Advanced Technologies in Food Chemistry’, organised by the trainee workshop and seminar committee, was held on the 22nd of February 2023 in the premises of the Adamantane House, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon and the event was also broadcasted live on ZOOM.
