Item 11B NMR Spectroscopy(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2023-09) Perera K. Sarath DBoron hydrides are known as electron deficient compounds. There are two NMR active isotopes (e.g., 10B and 11B). Boron-11 NMR spectroscopy is widely used to find out molecular structures and exchange processes of boron hydrides.Item 3D and 4D Printing of Biomedical Materials (BMMs)(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2024-09) Siriwardana, A.A. Gayan KavindaThree-dimensional (3D) printing, or additive manufacturing (AM), is a novel technology that fabricates materials on a print bed layer-by-layer. AM manufactures objects with simple to complex geometries using computer-aided design (CAD) models. AM can process various materials, such as polymers, hydrogels, ceramics, glass, metals, and other composites Four-dimensional (4D) printing is considered the next-generation advancement of AM technology, adding a fourth dimension as the time-dependent shape/functional change after printing. 4D printing processes smart materials capable of changing the shape or function upon exposure to certain stimuli such as humidity, temperature, light, pH of the medium, solvent, and magnetic and electric fields. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) play a key role in this context. AM technologies involved in 4D printed BMMs are mainly direct ink write (DIW), SLA, and multi-MJ, targeting applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, medical devices, and diagnostics. BMMs are broadly defined as biomaterials manufactured or processed to be utilized as medical devices or related components.Item 3D Printed Antimicrobial Cups for Heavy Metal Chelation(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2026-01) Siriwardana A. A. Gayan KavindaSafe drinking water is a fundamental requirement for life. It also is a critical component for agriculture, irrigation, and commercial industries. Industrial water pollutants often include heavy metal ions such as lead, cadmium, copper, arsenic, and mercury. Exposed individuals to these suffer from numerous health issues including disorders in the renal, neurological, gastrointestinal, endocrine, immune, reproductive systems, and also skin diseases.Item 3D Printed Eco-Friendly Acoustic Panels(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2025-01) Siriwardana,A. A. Gayan KavindaSound pollution, one of the current environmental issues, arises from myriad sources ranging from traffic, construction, and industrial activities to aircraft/ spacecraft, loud music, and other household appliances. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, sound waves above 65 decibels (dB) are considered as polluted noiseItem 3D Printing of Elastomers(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2024-01) Siriwardana,Gayan. A. A.3D printing, also referred to as Additive Manufacturing (AM), has become a demanding technology in the world which can fabricate threedimensional objects in a layer-by-layer fashion using computer-aided design (CAD) models.Item A Breakthrough in Battery Research: Lithium Ion Batteries(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2020-01) Rathuwadu,NadeeshaAs the energy crisis is growing, the need of having a sustainable energy economy has become crucial more than ever to cope with the high energy dependence and demand of the modern day-to-day work.Item A Journey: from a Chemist to a Cancer Biologist(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2022-06) Samarakkody,Ann SanojiCells in an organism are under constant exposure to extrinsic and intrinsic stressors. Molecular mechanisms are in place to dampen the detrimental effects on the cell at the level of cellular pathways and also at the level of gene expression.Item A nanoscale aperture with molecular-level fingerprinting prospects(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2022-06) Bandara,NuwanA nanopore is a nanoscale aperture in an otherwise impervious membrane (solid state or biological) that functions as the sole fluidic pathway between two electrolyte reservoirs.Item A novel immunoanalytical method for obesity biomarker detection using antibody functionalized silver nanoparticles(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2020-09) Abeysinghe,A. A. D. TObesity is a serious health issue related with increased body fat content. Escalating numbers of patients have been reported worldwide throughout the recent past, associated with a high cost in the health care sector. Other than being a disease condition by itself, it also acts as a risk factor for many metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.Item Achieving gender equality and empowerment of women chemists(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2021-06) Wickramathilake,ChamariGender equity or fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs is vital for achieving gender equality which is a global priority today. Women and girls represent half of the world’s population and they represent half of world’s human potential.Item Achieving Gender Equality of Women in Science – Challenges and Opportunities(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2022-06) Vithanage,MeththikaGender equality is one of the UN sustainable development goals however, less attention has been paid to the role of women in science.Item Actions Vs Words to Liberate Women Chemists(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2021-06) Nawarathne,Irosha NDespite nationwide initiatives to improve the retention of women and minorities in the sciences and engineering, the percentage of female graduate students in chemistry is at 40.9% and the percentage of female postdoctoral fellows is at 25.5% in 2019; furthermore the percentage of female chemists employed by the federal government has decreased by 4% from 2008 to 2017 in the United States.Item Activated Carbon; A Sustainable Solution(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2023-09) Kariyawasan RajithaWe operate on coconut shell-based activated carbon. The largest raw material for activated carbon is coal, second is wood and then coconut shells.Item Additive manufacturing (3D printing) of metals and alloys: current trends and future outlook(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2024-05) Siriwardana, A.A. Gayan Kavinda3D printing, also referred to as Additive Manufacturing (AM), has become a demanding technology in the world which can fabricate three dimensional objects in a layer-by-layer fashion using computer-aided design (CAD) models. AM possesses the unique ability to create complex geometries not conducive for conventional manufacturing techniques such as injection moulding, forging, and machining. Metal 3D printing, one of the increasingly developing areas of AM, started in 1994 with the invention of the first metal 3D printer; EOSINT M250 by Electro Optical Systems, Germany. It used basically a low-temperature alloy for the AM process.Item Advanced Applications of Poly (lactic acid)(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2023-01) Dinesh C. AluthgePoly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable, compostable and biocompatible polyester. PLA was first synthesized by Wallace Hume Caruthers at DuPont in 1932 via the polycondensation of lactic acid. However, the modern industrial process for PLA synthesis, polymerizes lactide, the cyclic diester of lactic acid (Figure 01).Item Advanced Applications of Poly (lactic acid)(Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, 2023-01) Aluthge Dinesh C.Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable, compostable and biocompatible polyester.
