dc.description.abstractPoly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable, compostable and biocompatible polyester. PLA was first synthesized by Wallace Hume Caruthers at DuPont in 1932 via the polycondensation of lactic acid. However, the modern industrial process for PLA synthesis, polymerizes lactide, the cyclic diester of lactic acid (Figure 01).
